Sponsoring- Canadian Girls Hockey Team

For the last two years, Neve has sponsored an elite girl's competitive hockey team located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The team is part of the National Capital Competitive Program (NCCP) and the level is Peewee "AA"-the highest level of girls' hockey for ages 12-13.

Girl's hockey has exploded in Canada over the past 10 years and the N.C.C.P teams represent the best and most talented female hockey players in eastern Ontario. Many of the girls travel long distances to participate in the NCCP program, often travelling more than 60 miles. While practicing in Ottawa, the team prepares for tournament play, mostly in the Toronto area.

Neve became interested in supporting girl's hockey and in the Capitals in particular through her cousin, who is a player on the Peewee "AA" team. The NCCP program attracts girls looking to advance their hockey careers and perhaps achieve the ultimate goal of representing their country in international competitions, like the Olympics. Neve sees supporting the team as a way of helping talented girls develop in an area of sport that has not traditionally included girls and which has been often underfunded.

The girls on Neve's team wear her name on their red jerseys. It is a thrill for the girls to know they represent Neve and they wear her name proudly. These jerseys continue to generate interest wherever the team plays, especially in out-of-town arenas. There continues to be media interest in the team, including write-ups in the Ottawa and Toronto newspapers.

All of the girls registered in the N.C.C.P program are looking to advance their hockey careers either through scholorships and or the ultimate goal of representing their country in future International competition.

It is through contributions like that of Neve's that keep the dream alive for many of the girls who couldn't afford it otherwise. Icetime, dryland training facility rental, tournaments, and travel for such an elite team are very expensive. It is through generous contributions that teams are able to operate at such a high level of competition. Thanks Neve!

Fact Sheet

Last year, Neve's team had an extraordinary year, winning gold in the following tournaments: Beatrice Aeros. Tournament in Toronto, the NCCP Tournament in Ottawa, the Mississauga Girl's Tournament in Toronto, the Silver Stick Tournament --the North American Championship, in Sarnia, Ontario. The team won silver in the Hamilton Girl's Tournament in Hamilton, Ontario and silver in the Provincial Championship in Toronto. The team was undefeated in league play, allowing only 4 goals all season.

This year's team hopes to repeat many of the successes of last year. Led by head coach, Dave St. Germain, and assistants, Bonnie Paul and Mel Morin, this year's team has four returning players, a core group of talented "rookies", plus a new crop of strong 13 year olds, especially in the defensive positions. The team has three forward lines, five defencemen and two goalies. The team recently won gold at the NCCP Tournament in Ottawa in a thrilling shoot-out against Mississauga in the final game. The team looks forward to defending its gold medal title at that Silver Stick Tournament in Sarnia in February, 2001.
